As a President Emeritus of the California Federation of Teachers and as a Mathematics Professor Emeritus of  Los Angeles Valley College, I am well versed on the issues facing education today. This page will explore those issues as they arise.

January 10, 2022: Today the big issues involve whether students should go back to onsite learning, the Republican drive to whitewash history and burn books that offend their followers, the underfunding of education from pre-school to the university, the attempt to make colleges and universities into job factories instead of institutions of learning, and the attempts to privatize education at all levels. There is also the continuation of the know-nothing movement to replace science with beliefs (such as an acceptance of the creation myth, the acceptance of the preaching of the Christian evangelists, the word of faith healers, the belief in “God’s will” and the musings of Fox News propagandists} as well as the general anti-intellectual bent of too many Americans.

Of particular concern is the direction that California and some other states are moving to remove the “community” from Community colleges.
